Myths on China in the World

Dr. Luke Patey will draw on his recent book, “How China Loses: The Pushback Against Chinese Global Ambitions” to unravel myths about China’s growing power in the world. Is China’s Belt and Road Initiative in Africa and the wider Global South a ‘debt trap’ or ‘just business? Is Europe overly dependent on China for trade and investment? Is the United States behind efforts to build a coalition in Asia to counter China and deter a possible future war over Taiwan?

There is no bigger foreign policy challenge for America than getting China right. In this annual Humphreys Lecture, Dr. Luke Patey, from the Danish Institute for International Studies and the University of Oxford, will argue that it is imperative for Americans to understand how the rest of the world is recalibrating its relationship with China and its role in shaping the ultimate reach of Beijing’s global influence.
