Workshop with Artist Natalia Andreeva from Sketching to Oil Painting March 22-25, 2021, 4 days (3 hours/day) Do you love Russian art and want to learn what makes it so unique and special? Join our series of workshops with a nationally known Russian-American artist Natalia Andreeva. The workshop is a rare opportunity to study and get a broad perspective on Russian art, techniques, and vision. Natalia will share unique insights on the specifics of observing a subject, seeing light, form, and the atmosphere. She will discuss formal techniques such as space and planning, design, value, color, and edges, and approach to the painting. The workshop will include Drawing, Alla Prima, painting en Plein Air, completion of a series of sketches, field studies, and work on a larger painting. Students will learn an efficient way of approaching Plein air work and will gain confidence which are key components for satisfaction with the process and with the resulting work.
Day 1– Sketching Everything starts from an idea, and quick sketching is helping to document with spontaneity, excitement, and a greater comfort level. You will learn a quick tips on creating image using different materials and textures, the importance of pencil pressure and line weights, scale, proportion, depth perception, 2D vs. 3D objects, perspective drawing. You will also leave the workshop feeling recharged and inspired.
Day 2- Ever struggled with drawing, or wanted to learn the basics? Then this class is designed just for you! Choosing a unique subject matter can help you make it your own. We will concentrate on observation skills, focus on simple shapes that can be found in more complex objects like cubes, cylinders, and cones. Our objective is to develop observation of proportions, perspective, and tonal value; and to improve skills in using line and stroke. As a result, you will feel more confident in your work.
Day 3 -4 Still Life Alla Prima After finishing drawing during the previous day we will paint from a simple Still Life via Alla Prima. Alla Prima paintings are quick and are completed in one session while the paint is still wet, this requires a balance of spontaneity and accuracy, . You will learn how to evaluate the tonal values of color, spots, shapes and the direction of light. Learn about choosing a subject, composition, values, color temperature, simplification, how to start and when to stop. Each day will include a demonstration followed by opportunities to create multiple paintings with frequent one-on-one instruction.
