Contemporary composer Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring is one of the most decisively American pieces of symphonic music ever composed. Copland was able to make traditional music innovative with his use of folk hymns and melodies based on traditional American music, making classical compositions relatable to the common citizen. Copland’s Eight Poems of Emily Dickinson was naturally inspired by Dickinson’s poetry and will be presented with the assistance of the always lovely and radiant soprano, Emily Pulley.

Another favorite composer will close this performance: Mozart composed his Symphony No. 25 when he was only 17 years old. In true teen angst form, this work is considered to be Mozart’s first “tragic” symphony and was written in a “storm and stress” style featuring dramatic emotional extremes often represented by minor keys, sudden changes in tempo, dynamics, and expressive music elements.
