Genocide in Darfur, State Collapse in Sudan

Twenty years after war, massacre and starvation in Darfur, Sudan prompted an extraordinary American and international mobilization, the next generation of the infamous Janjaweed are perpetrating a shockingly similar pattern of mass killing and displacement on the non-Arab communities of Darfur. This time, the crimes are unfolding without outcry or restraint. The presentation will explain the political dynamics behind the new war, the new political order that it portends in Sudan and the Sahara-Sahelian region, and what the United States and United Nations might do in response.
