The Scowcroft Institute of International Affairs at the Bush School of Government & Public Service at Texas A&M University invites you to join Lizzie Collingham, independent historian and Visiting Fellow at Jesus College, Cambridge, as she discusses “The Struggle for Food Security in the 20th Century.” on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at 5:30 p.m. CT at the Annenberg Presidential Conference Center.

Join us for an insightful and thought-provoking event with Lizzie Collingham as she examines the historical significance of food security in the context of conflict and war. Drawing on her extensive research, Dr. Collingham will delve into the tumultuous decades of the 1930s and 1940s, where the pursuit of food security became a driving force behind many conflicts and even served as an engine of war.

Through her analysis, Dr. Collingham will explore the lessons we can learn from WWII when it comes to addressing the issue of food security in the world today. She will offer new perspectives on the challenges that we face in ensuring that everyone has access to nutritious and sustainable food, and will encourage us to think critically about how we can work towards a more equitable and peaceful future.

 

Speaker Biography

 

Lizzie Collingham is an independent historian who uses food as a way of linking the minutiae of daily life to the broad sweep of historical processes. She is the author of Imperial Bodies: the physical experience of the Raj c.1800–1947, Curry: a tale of cooks and conquerors,The Taste of War: World War II and the battle for food, The Hungry Empire: how Britain’s quest for food shaped the modern world and The Biscuit: the history of a very British indulgence. She is currently a Visiting Fellow at Jesus College, Cambridge.
